Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stump grinding cost?

This is the #1 question we get asked, and that’s perfectly fine. Why wouldn’t you want to know what stump grinding cost right off the bat? But the truth is, it’s impossible to answer. There isn’t a standard cost or set fee for stump grinding.

What is standard, is that the cost of stump grinding is based off the height of the remaining stump, and the diameter of the area that is to be grinded (not just the diameter of the top of the stump).

If you would like a free estimate to have your stump grinding done, click here  to contact us. You can also text 215-436-0598 or e-mail paul@pgstumps.com a picture of your stump with something we can reference the height and diameter (basketball, water bottle, etc.), and we can send you an estimate.

After the stump grinding is complete, can I plant another tree?

Is it sometimes possible? Yes. But should you? No. After the stump grinding is complete, there are still many challenges that a new young tree will face:

- Underground roots: If the tree that was removed was a larger species, there will still be roots underground even after the stump grinding is complete. This will limit the space for the new tree’s roots to grow.

- Nutrients in the soil: After the stump grinding is complete, there will still be nutrients left behind in the soil from the old tree. Even if the old tree was healthy, those nutrients can change the balance in the soil which will take away from the new tree.

- Diseases in the soil: If the old tree was removed because of a disease, it is likely the soil still contains the disease, and that disease can be introduced into the new tree.

If I can’t plant another tree, what do I do after you are done grinding the stump?

Just because you shouldn’t plant another tree, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t plant anything else. If you choose to leave the debris on site after your stump is grinded (The Private), you have a great base for a mulch bed. Stump debris is extremely similar to the mulch you would buy from a nursey, so it can be a great start to a mulch bed where you can plant flowers, bushes, etc.

Growing grass is the most common end result after having a stump grinded, and it is fairly easy to do. You first will want to have all the debris removed from the area where the stump grinding has occurred (The Corporal). Then you can spread top soil over the area where the stump was, install your grass seed, and the grass growing process has begun. We have this option available and can get it all done for you (The Sergeant).

I use and recommend Scott’s products. If they are good enough for my Phillies’ ground crew to use, they’re good enough for me. Here is some great info on how to take care of your new grass after I leave: https://www.scotts.com/en-us/library/lawn-care-basics
